Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, is in critical condition after collapsing on the field Monday night during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Here’s what we know:
How it happened: Hamlin fell on his back just moments after rising from an open field battle against Bengal wide receiver Tee Higgins.
Within 10 seconds, the Bills coach was healing the player. The ambulance was brought to the field in less than 5 minutes. And Hamlin was given CPR, according to the ESPN broadcast. He was then taken to the hospital.
His status: In a statement at about 10 p.m. ET, the NFL said Hamlin was in critical condition in a Cincinnati hospital.
In a teleconference around midnight, the NFL said there were no updates on Hamlin’s condition other than what was previously provided.
game: Play was suspended at 5:58 of the first quarter. The game was then officially postponed. The NFL said more details about the next steps would come in “The timing was right”, adding that Hamlin’s well-being was a priority.

A little bit about Hamlin: The 24-year-old Pennsylvania native joined the Bills in 2021 as a sixth-round pick from the University of Pittsburgh. He has played every game this season.
According to Pittsburgh Panthers player profiles, he wore the red jersey — meaning he sat out games while still on the team — in 2016 due to injury. The NFL website added that he missed time due to injuries in 2017 and 2019.
